Dear CF community,

to more specifically describe sea-ice output from climate-model simulations for the CMIP6 Sea-Ice MIP (SIMIP), we would like to propose the following additional new CF standard names (as part of the SIMIP CMIP6 data request).
1. magnitude_of_sea_ice_normal_stress: Average normal stress in sea ice (first stress invariant), units 'N m-1’. This is a horizontal stress, which is perpendicular/normal to each of the vertices making up the a grid cell in the horizontal plane. The average represent the spatial average stress. Cell_method attribute "area: average”
2. magnitude_of_sea_ice_shear_stress: Maximum shear stress in sea ice (second stress invariant), units 'N m-1’. This is a horizontal shear, the areal maximum shear of the normal and shear stress stress acting on the vertices of a grid. Cell_method attribute "area: maximum”.
3. magnitude_of_sea_ice_velocity_shear: Maximum shear of sea-ice velocity field (second shear strain invariant)(new variable with units '1/s’). This is the areal maximum shear strain rate in the horizontal plane of the sea ice. Cell_method attribute "area: maximum”
Thank you very much for your feedback, guidance and input.

With best wishes, for the SIMIP Steering Committee,

Alexandra Jahn

Dear Alexandra

Thanks for the proposals. As we have discussed, I think the standard names
are fine. For CMIP6 and SIMIP it is perfectly OK to specify the cell_methods
for the diagnostics you want. The standard_name definitions, however, should
not include mean, maximum, etc. or the specification of cell_methods. The
standard_name and cell_methods together describe the diagnostics.

Best wishes

Jonathan
